Today, 2nd October we remember Morton Man, Arthur Newton.
Arthur was born in Morton in 1899, the son of Robert Newton and his wife Elizabeth Haresign.
Arthur enlisted in the 4th battalion Lincolnshire regiment which eventually saw him around Yrpes in late September 1917 for the 3rd Battle of Ypres also known as Passendaele.
Between the 25th and 29th September the 4th Lincolnshire were involved in the heavy fighting for Polygon Wood which saw 10 officers and 275 men emerge from the trenches on the 29th out of the 21 officers and 563 that entered them only 4 days before.
Arthur was wounded during the actions during this battle and found himself in a casualty clearing station near Proven where he eventually died of his wounds on the 2nd October 1917.
Private Arthur Newton 201499, 2nd/4th Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment, is remembered with honour at Mendinghem Military Cemetary located 17 Kms north-west of Ieper (Ypres) town centre.
